On 21 February 2017, a group of Asha supporters in Melbourne enjoyed a private screening of the Oscar-nominated Australian film, LION, starring Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman and Sunny Pawar. We were honoured to have the movie introduced by director Garth Davis and also enjoyed hearing from Asha student Mahinder Shrivas, who is currently studying in Melbourne.
It was significant for Mahinder, an Asha graduate who is currently pursuing post-graduation at The University of Melbourne, to attend the screening. He also had the opportunity to meet the director of the movie, Mr Garth Davis.
A spellbound Mahinder shares, “Meeting Mr Davis was a great honour for me. I shared my story and he was all praises for Asha. He shared his moments while making movie and I shared how different it is to live in another country. The movie especially overwhelmed me since I could relate to Dev Patel’s character. In the first part, when the boy was going to Australia, everybody in the theatre turned towards me, and smiled. It reminded me of my journey to Australia and the times here after."
