Shyama Devi, a 62-year-old woman, has lived in the Mayapuri slum community for the past 40 years after moving from the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh. Life has been an unrelenting struggle for Shyama and her 65-year-old husband, who works tirelessly as a rickshaw puller. Their hardships intensified when they lost their small grocery shop to a government demolition project aimed at extending the nearby railway line. This demolition not only took away their primary source of income but also their sense of stability.
Despite the challenges, Shyama and her husband remained devoted to raising their three children—two daughters and a son—who all lived together in a single shanty near the railway tracks. Over time, her children married and moved away, leaving Shyama and her husband to navigate life on their own.
Three years ago, Shyama’s life took a devastating turn when she was diagnosed with uterus cancer. Lacking the financial means and access to timely medical care, her condition rapidly deteriorated. To make matters worse, she later developed heart-related issues, adding to her already fragile health.
Shyama’s life began to change when she associated with the Asha team. Recognizing the urgency of her condition, Asha team ensured she received life-saving cancer treatment, including chemotherapy sessions at AIIMS, one of India’s premier government hospitals. The team supported her throughout the grueling process, accompanying her to the hospital for treatments and ensuring she received proper care and follow-ups. Thanks to Asha’s support, Shyama successfully recovered from cancer.
However, her health challenges didn’t end there. When Shyama began experiencing heart problems, Asha stepped in once again, facilitating her successful heart surgery at AIIMS. With consistent medical follow-ups and free medicines provides by Asha, Shyama's health has significantly improved. Understanding her needs, the Asha team provide monthly grocery bags containing essential items as well as medicines directly to her home, ensuring she is cared for.
Despite being left alone after her children moved away, Shyama has found a family in Asha. Their dedicated Asha team ensures she receives not just material support but also emotional comfort, demonstrating the power of compassion and community care.
