Guided by Hope: How Asha Helped Laxmi Prepare for College

Laxmi, a bright and determined 16-year-old girl from the Tigri slum community, dreams of becoming a teacher and inspiring generations to come. Despite overwhelming hardships, she has never given up on her dreams.
Her father worked as a housekeeping staff earning just ₹10,000 a month (116.77 USD), most of which was sadly lost to alcoholism. In October 2024, he passed away suddenly from a heart attack, leaving Laxmi’s family shattered — emotionally and financially.

With no work experience, her mother bravely stepped up, taking a tough job as a cleaner at a private school to support her three children. She wakes up before dawn, travels far, works long exhausting hours, and returns home late at night — just to make ends meet.
When Laxmi expressed her desire to go to college, her maternal uncle, now influencing family decisions, insisted she abandon her dream and take up a beautician course instead. He refused to support her education. Only her mother stood beside her, encouraging her not to give up.
Faced with poverty, family pressure, and fading hope, Laxmi almost gave up on her dreams — until Asha stepped in.
The Asha team visited Laxmi’s home multiple times, listened to her fears, and fought for her dreams. They counselled her family, inspired her to believe in herself, and promised to stand by her every step of the way.

Today, Laxmi has filled out her university entrance application and is preparing with full dedication at the Asha Centre — practicing mock tests, solving sample papers, and guided by mentors who believe in her potential.
