From Scrapyard to Scholarship: Juhi’s Triumph

Hi everyone, great news! Juhi from one of the Mayapuri slum communities has reached University of Sydney! Her father worked as a laborer in a scrapyard for years, lost his job during Covid, and now sells vegetables on a cart from lane to lane. Juhi, always a shy girl, has suffered poverty and gender discrimination all her life, coming from the conservative culture she was born and raised in.
What a wonderful turnaround, a wonderful miracle! She is the second girl to go to Australia after Mohini. She will be doing a Masters in Public Health at University of Sydney on a full scholarship and a generous stipend from the university. Here are some amazing pictures of her arrival at Sydney and of her beautiful room at the prestigious residential St Paul’s College. Way to go Juhi! The Asha family is with you all through your journey, to bless you, help you, encourage you.
Thanks to the many in Asha Delhi as well as members of the Global Asha family who have played important roles in her life. Dick Hogben: please say a huge thanks to her IELTS teacher Meta who has been so diligent and committed towards Juhi’s IELTS journey. The best of IELTS students don’t get overall IELTS scores of 7.5. Her score far exceeded what she needed. Amazing, wouldn’t you agree?
Special thanks to Chris Elstoft for his critical role in helping us foster the relationship with USyd and guide Asha’s IHEP in charge Amitava through important decision-making processes. Big thanks to everyone who is donating to Asha in India. It’s a long journey in India before students are ready to leave and requires intense resources and interventions.
