Naziya, a young girl from Amar Park slum community in Zakhira, Delhi, comes from a family of 10, including her parents, one brother, and six sisters. Originally from Bihar, they settled in Zakhira and have been connected with Asha since the beginning. Naziya’s journey is a reflection of perseverance and the life-changing impact of the Asha family’s support.
From birth, Naziya faced a health issue: the left side of her face appeared sunken. Doctors assured her family that it would improve with time. However, as she grew older, she began to lose her hearing. Despite starting treatment at the nearest government hospital, her condition saw little improvement. When her family applied for a disability certificate, they were denied because her hearing loss didn’t meet the required percentage for qualification.
Despite these challenges, Naziya was determined to not let them hold her back. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a doctor. She participated actively in the Bal Mandal (Children's Group) at the Asha center, where she received vaccinations and found support within the Asha community. As she entered high school, her dream of studying science to pursue medicine hit a major roadblock—her school didn’t offer the science stream. Instead of giving up, Naziya enrolled in the arts stream and put in tremendous effort, passing her exams with impressive marks.
While her dream of becoming a doctor couldn’t be fulfilled, Naziya discovered another path. Encouraged by Asha and her family, she decided to pursue a General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course. However, financial constraints arose as her father, a factory worker with a modest income, struggled to cover the course fees. That’s when Asha stepped in to help. They assured her father that, if he could arrange part of the money, they would provide additional financial support. With this collective effort, Naziya was able to enroll in the GNM program.
Today, Naziya is a first-year GNM student, deeply grateful for the opportunity she’s been given. She attends her classes regularly and is enthusiastic about building a future in healthcare, fulfilling her desire to help others. This accomplishment is not just a personal victory but a significant milestone for her family as well.
Naziya and her family extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Kiran and the Asha family. Without their guidance and assistance, her path might have been very different. Now, with their support, Naziya’s dream of creating a meaningful future in healthcare is well within reach, all thanks to her dedication and the unwavering encouragement from those who believed in her.
