Where there is a will there is a way

Soon I will have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to care for all types of people” says second-year Asha’s nursing student.

“I always had a passion for the medical field ever since I saw Dr Kiran working selflessly for the slum communities and was determined to become a nurse to help the most vulnerable and helpless.

‘My determination grew when my father died because of heart attack due to medical negligence’ says 21-year-old Anjum.
Anjum is the only daughter of Samina and Md. Nisar. They migrated to 5 by 2 feet small shanty at Zakhira slum community from Bihar 20 years ago for better livelihood. Nisar began to work as a daily wage-labour and earned a very little amount but he never stopped dreaming big for Anjum.

Anjum became an active member of Asha’s Bal Mandal while her mother was an active member of Asha’s Mahila Mandal. Samina and Nisar were happy to see Anjum growing under the wings of Asha.

Both her parents had developed a special relationship with the members of the Asha team in Zakhira. Nasir used to daily visit Asha to get his blood pressure checked. Nasir in spite of his health problems used to drop and pick Anjum up from school. It never mattered to him if it was freezing cold, sizzling hot or raining heavily. He has always had a keen interest in his daughter’s education.

When Anjum passed her high school exam with the support of Asha, Nasir made sure that he visited all the nursing institutes with the Asha team. Unfortunately, when the time came for her admission Nasir health deteriorated and he became bedridden.

Due to the immense financial crisis, Anjum could not pay fees on time and her admission was cancelled.

A month later, Nasir passed away and all the financial burden came on Anjum. Anjum had to work for a minimal amount of 2000 INR monthly as a night guard, but she did not lose hope. Every morning, Anjum used to come to Asha to study and prepare for next year’s admission for a nursing course.
Last year, the Asha team looking at her strength and positivity decided to support her financially and Anjum took admission to a nursing college. Currently, she is in her second year of nursing and juggles between part job and education. She never forgets what Dr. Kiran spoke about positively and optimism about life.
