On 17th February 2015, Dr Kiran and the Asha Team welcomed the Hon Alex Chernov AC QC, Governor of Victoria, Australia and Mrs Elizabeth Chernov to Asha’s Kanak Durga slum colony. He was accompanied by members of the board of Australian Friends of Asha and others from his office, many of whom were visiting Asha for the first time.
Warmly welcomed amidst loud claps and cheers Mr Chernov and the delegation heard from the community over three-hour-long session facilitated by Dr Kiran. While the women narrated their journey towards empowerment, the college students shared accounts of their experiences at University and work.
Community Health Volunteer, Meena, remarked how the life of women in the slum has changed from never being allowed to step outside their homes to now being able to bring about transformation in the lives of so many in their community.
Similarly Chandan, a student of 2nd year Mathematics (Hons.) at Venkateswara College, Delhi University shared his association with Asha and his most recent role as an Asha Student Ambassador. On behalf of all the students, he also thanked the Hon’ble Governor for his continued support that has been a source of tremendous inspiration to student.
The Hon’ble Governor thanked the community for welcoming him and his delegation with such warmth, and promised to be back again soon. To the students, especially, he said, “It is spectacular to see the women who have taken care of this Asha community, and the students who have develop so well. All I can say is – it’s inspirational and I congratulate everybody.”
After the formal interaction, the students and the entire delegation received an opportunity to discuss more about their lives over lunch served at the Asha centre in Kanak Durga.
The Asha Team would like to extend a heartfelt gratitude to Governor & Mrs Chernov for taking out the time to visit us once again.
